The Book Lodge ("we," "us," "our") respects your privacy and is committed to protecting your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.

By using app.thebooklodge.com (the "Service"), you agree to the practices described in this Policy.

We collect the following categories of information:

Information you provide directly:

• Name and email address (when you register an account)

• Profile information you choose to share (bio, genres, themes, books you're reading, work you've shared, etc.)

• Payment information (processed by Stripe; we do not store full payment card details on our servers)

• Communications with us (support emails, feedback, etc.)

• Content you create within the Service (writing, posts, comments, messages, blackout poems, etc.)

• Conversations with our AI literary companion, Wells

Information collected automatically:

• Device and browser information (IP address, browser type, operating system)

• Usage data (pages visited, features used, time spent)

• Cookies and similar technologies (see Section 7)

Information from third parties:

• Authentication data from Supabase (our authentication provider)

• Payment confirmation data from Stripe

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

• Provide, operate, and maintain the Service

• Authenticate your account and protect against fraud

• Process payments and manage subscriptions

• Personalize your experience (e.g., Wells remembering your prior conversations)

• Communicate with you about your account, service updates, and community announcements

• Notify you about contests, giveaways, and Lodge events

• Respond to inquiries and provide customer support

• Improve and develop new features

• Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information to third parties.

3. How We Share Your Information

We share information only in limited circumstances:

Service providers: We use trusted third-party services to operate the Lodge. These providers process data on our behalf and are bound by confidentiality obligations:

• Supabase — database, authentication, and storage

• Stripe — payment processing

• Anthropic — AI processing for Wells (your conversations with Wells are sent to Anthropic's API to generate responses)

• Brevo — transactional and community email delivery

• Vercel — website hosting

Within the community: Information you choose to make public (profile bio, work shared in your Guest Room, contributions to the Library or Fireside Lounge, etc.) will be visible to other Lodgers in accordance with the privacy settings you select.

Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, court order, or to protect the safety, rights, or property of The Book Lodge, our users, or others.

Business transfers: If The Book Lodge is acquired, merged, or sold, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before any such transfer.

4. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service.

If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information within a reasonable timeframe, except where we are required to retain it for legal, accounting, or fraud-prevention purposes.

Conversations with Wells are stored to provide continuity in your literary companion experience and may be retained as long as your account is active.

5. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have certain rights regarding your personal information, including:

• Access — request a copy of the personal information we hold about you

• Correction — request that we correct inaccurate information

• Deletion — request that we delete your personal information

• Portability — request your information in a machine-readable format

• Opt-out — unsubscribe from promotional emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in those emails

For California residents: You have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), including the right to know what information we collect, the right to delete, and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information.

For European Union and UK residents: You have rights under the GDPR, including the rights listed above plus the right to object to processing and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

6. Children's Privacy

The Book Lodge is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Members between the ages of 13 and 17 are subject to additional protections within the Service, including restrictions on direct messaging with adult members.

If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at housekeeping@thebooklodge.com and we will take steps to delete the information.

7. Cookies and Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies to:

• Keep you signed in

• Remember your preferences

• Understand how the Service is used

• Improve performance and security

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Disabling cookies may affect your ability to use some features of the Service.

We do not currently use third-party advertising trackers.

8. Data Security

We use industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS), encrypted database storage, and access controls. However, no system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a security breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law.

9. International Users

The Book Lodge is operated from the United States. If you access the Service from outside the U.S., your information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the U.S. By using the Service, you consent to this transfer.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "Effective Date" at the top of this Policy and, for material changes, provide notice through the Service or by email. Your continued use of the Service after the effective date of an updated Policy constitutes your acceptance of the changes.
